Club Contact

The new MP3 blog from London's club Contact. The idea is to allow people to hear new music they wouldn't have otherwise found but, if anyone has any copyright issues with a particular song, i'll take the link down. Songs are only available for a limited amount of time.

I tend not to play a lot of sixties pop at Contact, the few exceptions to this rule are almost always French stars like Françoise Hardy or Serge Gainsbourg. Shocking Blue are worth departing from convention for though. As part of the short-lived "Dutch Invasion", which also featured the ludicrous Golden Earring, the band topped the US charts with the immortal Venus, later to be covered by Bananarama. Although usually tagged as one-hit wonders, their back catalogue deserves a good look. Mariska Veres wailing away in her heavily-accented English against a backdrop of fuzzy guitars and driving organ sounds is quite something to behold. Send Me Postcard is every bit as good as their signature song.
